Insite Managers App

I would probably consider the Insite software my baby, as I spent over three years working on this product. The problem that the team set out to solve at Insite, was not a small one. It was highly ambitious. Across the industry, processes for facility maintenance has not changed in close to 40 years. The industry is operated on old processes that are tribally passed down by word of mouth. So no one really knows the correct “process.”

The team began this project from scratch, gathering data from subject matter experts, and quickly iterating them into technical goals. The hardest part about Insite, is achieving alignment. Facility maintenance varies from client to client.  Region to region. Country to country. It can be based on the need of the environment, or laws governing the building’s tenants. Buildings can be labs.  Buildings can be campuses. Buildings can be a green house.

The skillset of employees who work within buildings also vary for different types of buildings. How does one train different types of employees? How can managers tasks work to multiple employees working in multiple buildings? How can one ensure there is compliancy? What are the rate of work completion?

The project sounded impossible and overly ambitious, which it was. And cynically, at the start of my job in 2015, I really felt like the goals of the software was impossible. But running on little sleep, fast design iterations and user testing, after three years, I can proudly say I helped build the foundation for the most comprehensive facility maintenance software in the entire world.

There were multiple teams working multiple projects. I led the design initiative in my team, furiously gathering requirements, interviewing subject matter experts, and pushing into development so we could validate our ideas. We had to work hand in hand with our product managers, engineers, QA teams, and customer service representatives. Over time, the groups in the company grew to include adoption and implementation teams.
